Angel Fire Fishing

Angel Fire is located in northeast New Mexico, in an area with an abundance of fishing resources for avid fishermen and beginners alike. Area lakes and streams provide the opportunity for you to hook up with a variety of freshwater game fish, but trout and salmon are the main attraction in most waters.

Eagle Nest Lake

Eagle Nest Lake covers 2,200 acres about 10 miles from Angel Fire. The lake is stocked regularly with rainbow trout and Kokanee salmon, which grow to between 15 and 20 inches. You can fish from the shore or launch a boat at Eagle Nest Lake State Park, which also offers camping and wildlife viewing. For the brave of heart winter fishing enthusiasts, Eagle Nest Lake is a destination for ice fishermen when the ice is thick enough to safely walk on.

Cimarron River

The Cimarron River is a cool, high mountain river that holds brown and rainbow trout. Certain sections are designated for fly-fishing only, but you can cast your bait or lure of choice in other parts of the river. The Cimarron River is also popular among canoeists, rafters and kayakers, and it flows through Cimarron Canyon State Park. You can also access two of the river’s tributaries — Clear Creek and Tolby Creek — which offer the chance to pursue trout with greater solitude.

Carson National Forest

Covering an immense 1.5 million acres, Carson National Forest is the perfect getaway for a nature lover. For fishermen, the area includes a number of streams, lakes and ponds that are open to fishing. The section of Forest called Valle Vidal includes some of the more productive waters, including Lost Lake, Horseshoe Lake and Middle Fork Lake. Streams include Comanche Creek, Columbine Creek and Rio Hondo.
